A woman walks past Wells Fargo bank in New York City, U.S., March 17, 2020. Wells Fargo shares fell Friday after the bank reported first-quarter earnings that showed a decline in interest income. Wells said its net interest income decreased 8% in the quarter, due to the impact of higher interest rates on funding costs, including the impact of customer migration to higher yielding deposit products. "The investments we are making across the franchise contributed to higher revenue versus the fourth quarter as an increase in noninterest income more than offset an expected decline in net interest income," Scharf added. Shares of the bank climbed more than 15% year to date, beating the S&P 500's 9% return.

Club holding Wells Fargo will post quarterly results on Friday, followed by our other financial holding, Morgan Stanley, on Tuesday. In theory, higher borrowing costs mean Wells Fargo can generate more money from those interest-earning assets, but it's not that simple. It's hard to say with the fluid inflation and rate expectations whether Wells Fargo might change its NII outlook when it reports on Friday. Wells Fargo also has a key long-term growth prospect in the potential removal of its $1.9 trillion Fed-imposed asset cap. A woman walks past Wells Fargo bank in New York City, U.S., March 17, 2020.

Wage growth has slowed; average hourly earnings increased 4.1% year over year in October. That measure of wage growth has steadily slid from the almost 6% year-over-year increases in March 2022 and April 2022. Even with slowing wage growth, workers may finally be seeing their earnings catch up to the big spike in inflation. Year-over-year changes from BLS show there has been real wage growth in recent months, based on average hourly earnings outpacing CPI inflation. "I think if we continue to see wage growth moderate, hopefully inflation moderates even more, and we continue to see more workers getting more inflation-adjusted raises."

Bottom line Wells Fargo's quarterly revenue outpaced expectations on the back of better-than-expected results for both net interest income (NII) and non-interest income. Middle-market banking revenue increased 23% year-over-year, as higher interest rates and loan balances were only partially offset by lower deposits. Asset-based lending and leasing revenue was up 3% annually, a result of loan growth and increased revenue from renewable energy investments. Total banking revenues increased 20% year-over-year, a result of higher rates and lending revenues, along with "higher investment banking revenue on increased activity across all products." Commercial real estate revenue increased 14% year-over-year, due to higher rates and revenue growth in the firm's low-income housing business.

The swiftest tightening of U.S. monetary policy in 40 years aimed at reining in sticky inflation has buoyed banks' interest income. Rival banking giant JPMorgan Chase (JPM.N) on Friday posted a rise in third-quarter profit as higher interest rates boosted its income from loans. Wells Fargo earned $1.48 per share in the third quarter, beating analysts' expectations of $1.24, according to LSEG data.

Emily Irwin, who works for Wells Fargo Bank, advises lottery winners on how to spend their money. She told Insider that people don't realize that winners are given very little support or guidance. First off, the lottery won't tell you whether to take the money as a lump sum or an annuity. To do this, start by assembling a trusted team of advisors, as the lottery won't provide one for you. Similarly, lottery winners shouldn't suddenly find themselves in the Olympics without proper training.

The return of large tech IPOs this week after a prolonged drought isn't just a test of investors' appetite for risky new offerings — it's a key moment for Wall Street's top advisor, Goldman Sachs . Delivery firm Instacart and marketing automation platform Klaviyo are expected to list as soon as next week. While they each operate in vastly different parts of the tech universe, the companies have one important thing in common: Goldman is a key advisor. That would be meaningful for Goldman, which is more dependent on investment banking than rivals JPMorgan Chase and Morgan Stanley . "This is the core of the core of what Goldman Sachs does," Mike Mayo, Wells Fargo banking analyst, said in a phone interview.

In the June quarter, Wells Fargo increased its allowances for credit losses by $949 million to account for potential losses in office loans. Wells Fargo is still operating under an asset cap that prevents it from growing until regulators deem that it has fixed problems from a fake accounts scandal.
